WORKING WITH
ARTISTS-IN-TRAINING

AT DRAMA SCHOOLS, UNIVERSITIES & ELSEWHERE

Gareth is a natural mentor, creating environments that achieve that trickiest of things: being simultaneously challenging and supportive.

He encourages students to take pride in — and ownership of — their work, and to think critically about the art they’re helping to make. Students who have worked under his direction speak fondly of the confidence and insight they gained from the experience.

Linda Muirhead
Theatre Arts Manager and Stage Management Tutor
Department of Drama & Theatre Arts at University of Birmingham

I originally trained as an Actor at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama, arriving in London as a nervous 18-year-old and graduating from their BA (Hons) Acting course with a new-found confidence in myself and the work I wanted to make.

I had three wonderful and transformative years at GSMD. Since then, inspired by the positive impact my own teachers had on my life and work, I’ve spent two decades seeking out opportunities and proactively developing initiatives that support the next generation of artists — helping them acquire the skills, confidence and connections to claim their place in the sector and build resilient careers.

I have extensive experience of teaching at drama schools, universities and elsewhere. I’ve taught a variety of disciplines including acting, devising, directing and stage management.

I’ve directed workshop and full productions, supporting actors, technicians and stage managers to apply their training in the creation of high-quality work for wider audiences and industry professionals.

I’ve been invited to design new modules as well as to review and update course content, all to ensure that what artists-in-training are being taught is relevant to and reflective of the industry they’re preparing to enter.

BESPOKE MODULE & WORKSHOP CREATION

Drawing upon a broad and diverse spectrum of historic and contemporary practitioners, I’ve designed, updated and led BA, MA, MFA and PGDip modules and workshops on:

  • Ensemble Practice
  • Research Methodologies
  • Audition Technique
  • Participatory Co-Creation
  • Applied Practice & Performance
  • Theatre in Community
  • Acting Technique
  • Contemporary Practice

  • Directing For Theatre
  • Setting Up A Theatre Company
  • Event Creation & Producing
  • Creative Industries

APPROACHES TO TRAINING

Here are some thoughts and ideas
about how I like to work with-artists-in-training

ON CRAFT

ON WELLBEING

ON FACILITATION

BEYOND CRAFT

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

Gareth is playful, respectful and deeply thoughtful. He always meets a group where they are and guides them towards meaningful, high-quality outcomes.

Watching students grow under his facilitation is a joy, and his knack for making the most of any group, no matter what constraints, is genuinely impressive.

He’s practical, clear-sighted, and driven by values that really matter.

Will Jackson
Student at University of Birmingham

Gareth is an incredibly generous director and a fantastic, knowledgeable mentor.

He has an infectious playfulness in the rehearsal room and manages to make everyone feel immediately comfortable with trying something in new ways. I particularly loved his collaborative practice and his ability to fold an actor’s ideas and research into a cohesive and compelling vision for a performance.

Marcus Paragpuri
Student at University of Birmingham

Gareth taught my first module at drama school. I had previously worked as a facilitator in schools; I remember stepping into the studio on the first day with Gareth and thinking “Oh, this is how it’s done!”

As a facilitator, Gareth is inspiring, energising and kind. He is extremely skilled at reading the room, facilitating an ensemble and bringing out the best in his students.

I found the lessons and principles in Gareth’s sessions to be invaluable, and I have carried many throughout my practice as an actor, theatre-maker and freelancer.

Lisa McKinley
Student at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

Whenever I’ve had the pleasure of working with Gareth, it was his generosity of knowledge and spirit that shone through. From the beginning of my career, Gareth has made me feel nothing but welcomed and included in the creative world.

The joy, professionalism and fun he brings to a space is so special and something I have aimed to harness and take with me in my work ever since.

Antonia Parker Smith
Student at University of Birmingham

Gareth has an ability to gently guide people into a creative mode of working which comes from a supportive and very safe place. Over the course of the work with Gareth I felt like I started to connect with that imaginative and playful part of myself which I’d pushed aside in my more ‘serious’ job that I’d been doing over the previous decade.

I’ll always be grateful for the work I did with Gareth, and I know he’s helped so many others in a similar way over the years. Aside from anything else, spending a few hours in his company is always great fun!

Lee Comley
Student at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

I worked with Gareth in the first five weeks of my time at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on the Ensemble Module, and I am still using the tools and techniques I learned from him to this day as a professional actor.

Gareth’s facilitation of the entire module was expertly crafted. I was encouraged to experiment, to trust myself and the other artists I shared the space with, and mostly, to find the fun!

Having been mentored by an artist like Gareth so early on in my career made a fundamental difference. He knew and understood what it was like to be an actor, flung out of drama school and into the industry as a fledgling. He gave us sound, realistic advice about the expectations of our career paths, what working professionally would look like, how to take care of yourself and others in all of the challenges and triumphs the acting industry throws at us. From him I learned the practical tools I needed to work and thrive as an artist today.

Carys Jones
Student at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

Gareth’s work ethic, values and world view have greatly shaped my personality, as well as my own acting and directing process.

He has this wonderful ability to make you feel like you’re the most special person in the world. When you spend more than half a second with him, you know that you are in a space that is safe, productive, unbelievably creative and filled with nothing short of a whole lot of magic.

Satya Baskaran
Student at University of Birmingham

Gareth is the kindest, most knowledgeable and down-to-earth director I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

He creates a safe, supportive environment which encourages play, vulnerability and honesty.

I believe Gareth’s success comes from the simple fact that he truly cares. The learnings from my time with him have shaped me into the performer I am today and I am extremely grateful for our time together.

Tom Bonam
Student at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

Gareth’s energetic approach was inspiring and engaging. He treated us like collaborators, not just students. His direction and teaching enabled me to develop a strong foundation in practical theatre making and to contextualise my work within the cultural sector.

Katie Webster
Student at University of Birmingham

Gareth’s teaching style and expert knowledge made his module the highlight of my training year. It was the part I took most of forward into my professional life as an actor. The toolkit he gave us and his principles are a daily staple in my practice.

He leads with both kindness and specificity, whilst still allowing room for the actor to play and find their own journey.
